July 16 — Oberhofer, the Washington-formed/Brooklyn-based indie pop band, was one of a handful of bands performing at The Village Voice’s 4Knots Festival. Their penchant for pop/punk-esque song structure with some brilliant instrument work was perfect for the performance on South Street Seaport.
July 17 — When Taking Back Sunday announced that both Matt Rubano and Matt Fazzi would be leaving the band rather abruptly last summer, fans were confused — but when it was announced that original members John Nolan and Shaun Cooper would be returning, excitement escalated beyond measure. Flash forward almost a year later, and Taking Back Sunday released a new self-titled album, the original line-up’s first since the prolific Tell All Your Friends, and embarked on a U.S. tour. The band used this tour to bring together new and old fans of the band, and though they did make sure to play songs off their newest release, it was songs from the band’s 2003 debut that made the show one of the best of the summer. Though we do offer a fair share of concert reviews for our readers, the co-owners of MTT decided that we should start implementing posts that highlight upcoming shows within the NYC area on a week by week basis. Marina and The Diamonds’ indie-pop sound has been getting some fair share of recognition lately — with the solo act opening for Katy Perry on her California Dreams tour, this may be the last chance in some time to see the Welsh-born songstress in an intimate venue. Funk/80s pop rapper Gordon Voidwell will be opening for Marina and The Diamonds during what promises to be a stellar show. Continue reading

June 18 — Danish singer/songwriter/pop star Oh Land took the stage at Rumsey Playfield, also known as the Central Park Summerstage for the 2011 New York City Pride Rally, which kicked off a week of festivities ultimately culminating with the Pride March on June 26. Oh Land’s bubbly personality and eccentric looks (yes, she wore a white headdress) was a perfect match for the event — her performance itself was pretty spot-on as well. Continue reading
