Let’s face it, we all knew I was excited for All Time Low’s Dirty Work to come out. It was on my most anticipated album picks of the year, and I am always at an All Time Low show dancing around like a little fangirl. A lot of anticipation was building up for this album: would the band build upon their lackluster 2009 release, Nothing Personal, or bring it back to older (and arguably better) times and create music akin to their first two albums, Put Up or Shut Up and So Wrong, It’s Right? The band takes a slightly more experimental approach with Dirty Work, but in the end, it really does not work for them. Dirty Work is simply boring.
Way Yes, a musical duo hailing from Columbus, Ohio celebrated the new year right by releasing their newest EP, Walkability. Though the five-song EP is terribly short (not even lasting 20 minutes of play time), the band showcases an amazing array of sonic diversity and lyrical prowess, while making the CD enjoyable to listen to — Walkability is the type of EP that will be played while driving around town, relaxing at home, or during extremely intense life moments. The EP is a breath of fresh air in terms of musical quality; it is short and to the point yet fans out in many different directions. Way Yes has patented a sound that is both unique and engaging, and for this reason alone, Walkability deserves a listen to.
The title song of the record, which starts the album off with a wicked percussion beat that is reminiscent of Caribbean music, starts off the record on a high note — rarely, if ever, faltering from it. Some highlights of the album are the songs “Important,” which brings in lo-fi synthesizers to the mix, and “Gino,” a strictly electronic driven song that is easy to get stuck in your head.
Way Yes’ Walkability is a short but enjoyable EP. The duo’s ability to mesh two distinct sounds — Caribbean percussion with indie, lo-fi electro synths — into something that is not only catchy but also inimitable is something that will definitely get you hooked.
